SMS vs Email: Which Works Better for Laundromat Customer Retention?

The short answer: use both — but for different things

SMS and email are not interchangeable. Each has distinct strengths that make it ideal for specific types of communication. The laundromats that see the best retention results use both channels strategically, not randomly.

Texts tend to get read soon after they arrive. Email gets opened less reliably but allows for longer, richer content. Understanding when to use each is what separates effective retention marketing from noise.

When to use SMS

One rule comes first: text only the customers who've opted in to your texts, and give every one of them an easy way out with Reply STOP.

Time-sensitive offers: "Flash sale: 30% off wash & fold TODAY ONLY. Reply STOP to opt out." SMS creates urgency because people read it immediately. A flash sale sent by email might not be seen until tomorrow — when the offer has expired.

Appointment reminders: "Your pickup is scheduled for tomorrow at 9am. Reply YES to confirm." Short, functional, high open rate.

Win-back messages: "Hey [name], we miss you! Here's 20% off your next visit. Expires Friday. Reply STOP to opt out." The personal, direct nature of SMS makes these feel like a message from a friend, not a business.

Review requests: After a visit, a quick SMS with a one-tap Google review link is easier to act on than an email because the friction is so low.

When to use email

Welcome sequences: A 3-5 message series introducing your services, sharing tips, and building a relationship. This needs more space than SMS allows.

Educational content: Laundry tips, stain removal guides, seasonal content. This builds trust and keeps you top of mind between visits.

Detailed promotions: If you're running a holiday special with multiple offers, email lets you lay it out visually with images and clear CTAs.

Monthly newsletters: A roundup of what's new, upcoming promotions, and customer spotlights. Keeps your brand present without being pushy.

The retention numbers that matter

Bringing back a customer you already have usually costs far less than finding a new one through ads, because they already know where you are.

The most valuable metric is customer lifetime value (LTV). Say a visit is worth $20. A customer who visits once is worth $20. A customer who comes back monthly for a year is worth $240. Retention marketing is how you turn the first number into the second.

Even a modest improvement in your repeat rate adds revenue with zero increase in ad spend.

Setting up the system

The beauty of modern retention marketing is that it's almost entirely automated. Once the sequences are built and connected to your POS data, they run on autopilot — triggering based on customer behavior, not manual effort.

A customer hits 30 days without a visit? Win-back SMS fires. New customer makes their first purchase? Welcome email sequence begins. Someone leaves a Google review? A reply thanks them, whatever the star rating.

You set it up once. It runs forever. And the revenue compounds every month.
